Finding Love

11: What is your favorite quote? How does it relate to your life?

Life is not about finding happiness, it’s about finding love.” – Dostoevsky

The quote means a lot to me because it points to the fact that things you love won’t always make you happy.  I don’t know if he was talking about romantic love, but that’s not how I interpret the quote.  I interpret it as unconditional love, the love that my parents still give me even when I’m an asshole, or the love that kept me going through long hell nights with pneumonia when I was coordinating ACA, or the love that keeps me going back to the same parking lots to a team that I’m not dancing with anymore, or a love for my loved ones, or etc.  Finding something that I truly LOVE no matter what bullshit comes up, how I feel, if I’m unhappy or not, blah blah blah… there’s nothing more gratifying.

For me, the quote also been the heart of my intuition on deciding on different career paths.  I might be naive since I’m only 23 and at the very start of my professional life, but I would say to myself… if you don’t love it then what the hell are you doing?  And again, I don’t mean that love = constant happiness, but something that keeps you passionate despite the bullshit and despite how happy it makes you.  I think I’d be wasting myself to not do something that I want to pour all of my time and energy into.  I want to be involved in something that challenges me to be better, to tap deeper into myself to be more resourceful or faster or creative or stronger or whatever.

I would say that I am very lucky, because I think I’m already on my way to finding people and passions to hold onto through disaster and delight.
